The
art (some may consider it art) contained here was not created by me. In
fact it wasn't created by anyone. It was created by an artificial life
simulation, called LoveAndHate. I'm certainly not an artist, I'm a programmer,
but I found that the lifelike creatures that I have created had an artistic
side.
LoveAndHate
was created using StarLogo. In the words of the creators, "StarLogo
is a programmable modeling environment for exploring the workings of decentralized
systems -- systems that are organized without an organizer, coordinated
without a coordinator." StarLogo is free, and can be downloaded
and learned about at http://education.mit.edu/starlogo/.
If you want to make your own StarLogo simulation I highly suggest that
you read all of the documentation (or at least most of it) to help you
along the way. The documentation is very good, and they even provide some
nice sample projects if you learn best by seeing code in action. StarLogo
now has versions available for both Mac and PC, called StarLogo 1.0. I
did my simulation on the earlier version, MacStarLogo, which actually
runs faster.
The
project is provided on the downloads page,
complete with source code and documentation, but it will only work on
MacStarLogo. This will allow you to see the artists in action. I have
provided some of the more interesting pieces here, in the gallery.
For general information
on the LoveAndHate simulation and the images that it has created, see
the description page.
See
an Alife simulation of a different kind, the Virtual
World of Decision Making Turtles. This is an Alife simulation in 3D,
including "turtles" that move, eat, and evolve using a genetic
algorithm.
