Viewing the DMTs on the web is handy, but if you want to be able to run the simulation on your computer whenever you want, quit and restart the simulation where it last left off, and have a text file containing the stats for each generation, you will want to download these versions.

The simulation is available in both the Basic form and the Goal Based form (See the Demos page for explanation of these). Both of these simulation are available for both Macintosh and PC. Mac files are ~ 3.2 MB and PC files are ~ 2.8 MB.

These downloads provide these features in addition to those available in the web demos:

(1) Restart where it left off - The downloaded simulation will automatically pick up at the last completed generation when it is restarted. So, if you were half way through generation #11 when you quit, generation #11 would populate the environment when you restarted. The statistics also pick up where they left off. If you want to start fresh again, from generation #1, just delete the file "data", which will appear in the same directory as the simulation. This data file contains the last generation's stats and the current generation's genomes. If you save the data file in a different directory and then place that file back in the simulation directory later the simulation will use that data file once again. You can read the data file yourself by opening it in a text editor (you will want to make a copy and rename it before you do this, I suggest renaming it "data" + the current generation number + ".txt", "data100.txt" for example). You can then compare the genomes of different generations in this way.

(2) See the statistics for every generation - The statistics for each generation are saved in the file "stats.txt". This file is created by the simulation the first time you run it, along with the data file.

File Format of stats.txt (Basic Demo):

Generation Number, Number Left Alive, Average Age (no commas in file)

Example of first three generation's stats:
     1 17 196
     2 23 227
     3 25 235

The file format will be slightly different if you are running the Goal Based Demo (the one with red squares).

Generation Number, Average Goals Reached, Number Left Alive, Average Age

Example of first three generation's stats (Goal Based)
     1 0.2083 11 180
     2 0.2639 22 222
     3 0.1528 27 246

If you then wanted a graphical representation of the statistics for a number of generations you could import this text file into a data analysis or spreadsheet package (such as Microsoft Excel). See this example graph of the first nine generations of a run of the Goal Based Demo.
